Level 6

Self Care / Daily Living
Set up a routine for cleaning your own room or home
Tips:

Pick a time to do chores when you are likely to have more energy (eg, in the morning hours rather than late at night)

Concentrate on one room at a time

If you feel you have too much housework to get it all done at once, space it out over a few days

Sleep
Make your bedroom a place that is conducive to sleep
Tips:

Close the curtains or shades to make the room dark

Lowering the temperature by a few degrees at night can help you sleep better

Socialization
Arrange a small meal for a friend or family member
Tips:

Getting together for a short time with someone you trust will help you feel more comfortable about socializing in general

Planning for a small meal will keep your stress level down

Medication
Get to know the pharmacist who fills your prescriptions
Tips:

Your pharmacist can explain how to take your medicines correctly

Your pharmacist can tell you what side effects may occur and how to handle them

Your pharmacist can work with you to have your medications delivered if you have a problem with transportation and/or refills

Your pharmacist can tell you which medicines should not be combined, including over-the-counter remedies

Diet
Limit your intake of sweets to one treat or dessert per day
Tips:

Reducing your sweet intake helps control your weight

Too many sweets in the diet may keep you from being hungry for other foods you need to be healthy

If you have hyperglycemia or diabetes, a diet high in sugar may worsen your blood sugar levels

Exercise
Exercise with a friend several times per week
Tips:

Pick an exercise that you find enjoyable

Exercising with someone else can help you stay motivated to stick with your routine

Pick an exercise partner whose exercise/fitness goals are similar to yours

Regular exercise will help you manage your weight

Vocational Skills Development
Consider a volunteer job before getting a paying job
Tips:

Volunteer work is a good way to find work that meets your interests, or helps you develop new ones

Volunteering is a good way to become more involved with other people

Take charge of an activity (like making lunch) at your home or residential center as practice for work
