Level 5

Self Care / Daily Living

Do your laundry on a regular basis
Tips:

Keep your dirty clothes in one place, such as a laundry basket or hamper

If you use a laundromat, stay near your clothes while they are washing and drying, and be sure to allow enough time to complete your laundry before the facility closes

Sleep

Make it a goal to regularly get a good night's sleep
Tips:

Avoid heavy meals near bedtime

Avoid caffeine in tea, coffee, soda, and chocolate

Although you should drink water during the day, drink less toward the evening

Socialization

Develop a hobby or interest that will let you interact with other people
Tips:

Make a list of things you like to do or might like to do that bring you enjoyment

Talk with your occupational therapist or someone who can give you ideas about choosing a hobby

Having a hobby or an interest in a particular activity is stimulating and gives you opportunities to meet others

Medication

Understand the importance of avoiding alcohol and street drugs
Tips:

Associate with friends who do not drink or take street drugs

Find a supportive friend or family member you can call if you are tempted to drink alcohol or use street drugs

Avoiding alcohol and street drugs lessens your chances for having symptoms of relapse

Diet

Substitute healthy low-calorie snacks for more fattening ones
Tips:

When you feel hungry between meals, choose foods like celery, carrots, rice cakes, or low-fat popcorn

Chew sugar-free gum when you have the urge to snack

Know the difference between "mouth hunger" (the urge to use food to soothe feelings of boredom, nervousness, anger, sadness, or stress) and "stomach hunger" (your body's way of telling you it needs food)

Exercise

Increase your overall level of exercise, using routine activities
Tips:

Get off the bus several blocks from home and walk the rest of the way

Take the stairs instead of elevators and escalators

Regular exercise will help you manage your weight

Vocational Skills Development

Talk to your therapist about finding work
Tips:

If you don't have a job coach, ask your caseworker or therapist to help you find the right person to talk to

Make a list of the kinds of work that match your interests

Talk with your job coach about going back to school to get training that will lead to a job
