Tips:

Scrape food off dishes into garbage or disposal before washing

Keeping your dishes clean and your kitchen tidy will help keep away bugs

Sleep

Think soothing thoughts, like a peaceful natural scene, to help you relax
Tips:

Reading in bed or listening to music can help you drift off to sleep

If you find yourself worrying, keep a "worry book" by your bedside to jot down notes

If your bedroom is too noisy, consider wearing earplugs

Socialization

Consider joining a group to meet others with schizophrenia
Tips:

Talking with others who have the same illness as you can help you feel safe and supported

Belonging to a support group offers you a way to share your feelings and frustrations

Having a place to go and mingle and talk with others will give you a sense of belonging

Medication

Understand the possible side effects of your medication, such as drowsiness
Tips:

If your medication makes you drowsy, do not drive or operate machinery

Take your medicine closer to bedtime if you are supposed to take it in the evening

If you experience side effects, do not stop taking your medication, but speak to your doctor as soon as possible

Diet

Add to your diet a green salad or at least one serving of green, leafy vegetables each day
Tips:

Salads and green, leafy vegetables are a good source of roughage and fiber

Including these foods in your diet can help you manage your weight

Choose a low-fat dressing for your salad

Consider eating these vegetables as a healthy snack

Exercise

Increase your daily exercise
Tips:

Regular exercise will help you manage your weight

Taking a daily walk gives structure to your daily routine

Increasing the amount you exercise gives you a feeling of accomplishment

Exercise lowers your stress level and can take your mind off certain problems

Walk for 5-10 minutes longer than the last time by walking an extra time around the block

Vocational Skills Development

Set up a plan for ways to manage your money
Tips:

Make a list of expenses you are responsible for each month

Make a list of questions to ask your case manager or residential staff member regarding your finances

Your case manager (or residential staff, if you live in a group home) can help you devise a plan for managing your money
