Recognizing the Signs of Relapse

Recognizing the Signs of Relapse
The word relapse means different things to different people. For most people, relapse means they're getting sick — their symptoms are getting worse or old symptoms are returning.

People who are recovering from a mental illness have described relapse in many ways: Everyone has different symptoms, so your experience of relapse might be different from someone else's. But there is one thing that happens to most people who start to relapse — it can happen when they least expect it, and they usually become ill within a few days or weeks. You may be feeling well, and then one night you may not sleep well and may start to have other early-warning symptoms. You may begin to feel uneasy and get upset over things that are happening. Before you realize what's happening, everything seems to be out of control.
