Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy, also called "talk therapy," can play a key role in treating schizophrenia. Talk therapy consists of regularly scheduled talks with a mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, psychiatric social worker, or nurse. Patients may talk about problems, experiences, thoughts, feelings, or relationships.
By sharing experiences, individuals may gradually come to understand more about themselves and their problems. They can also learn to sort out the real from the unreal. However, psychotherapy is not a substitute for antipsychotic medication. It is most helpful in combination with drug treatment after a person's symptoms have started to improve with medication.
