Getting the Right Medication
Although there is no cure, a treatment program of medication and therapy can make schizophrenia a manageable illness. Schizophrenia is usually treated with antipsychotic medication. This medication is thought to be most effective when started early in the course of the illness.
Antipsychotics work to alleviate the psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia, such as hallucinations and delusions. They also work to help improve symptoms, such as disorganized thinking, social withdrawal, and lack of energy. Antipsychotics begin working quickly and reach their full effect after several weeks.
Unlike some other diseases, you cannot stop taking your medication once you start feeling better. Antipsychotic medications do not cure the disease they can only help treat the symptoms. According to the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD), "Most people who stop taking medication relapse within one year. It is very important that people with schizophrenia continue medication to prevent new attacks."
