Getting the Help You Need
Most people want to know how their illness will affect their lives. "Will I ever get back to normal?" is a question they often ask their doctors. No one can predict what will happen to you. Schizophrenia is an ongoing mental illness that can get better, but can't be cured. Most people who have schizophrenia will have to work at controlling their illness. In many ways, it's similar to the way people with high blood pressure need to work at controlling their illness. Frequent relapses can make your illness worse and make it hard for you to stay well. Doing everything you can to reduce the risk of relapse includes:
- Taking your medicine as directed
- Visiting your doctor regularly
- Keeping track of your symptoms
- Telling your doctor or case manager immediately if your symptoms get worse
- As you continue with treatment, stay focused on improvement
