The Effects of Mental Illness

What Is Schizophrenia?
Experiencing symptoms of schizophrenia can lead to feelings of fear, panic, embarrassment, anger, worthlessness, or isolation. Sometimes symptoms occur when you least expect them, which may make you feel as if you are losing control or your mind is "falling apart."

If you feel embarrassed about having symptoms or being in psychiatric treatment, you are not alone — it takes a lot of courage and inner strength to go on. Many people have found it useful to talk with a trusted friend, relative, mental health professional, or someone who has experienced similar symptoms.

Some people react to their symptoms by seeking relief through drinking alcohol or taking drugs like marijuana or cocaine. Although these substances may make you feel better initially, they always make symptoms worse in the long run. It is also important to know that taking only a small amount of these substances can bring on severe symptoms in someone with schizophrenia.

Seeking Treatment

With treatment and help managing symptoms, most people can feel happier and enjoy life a lot more. This doesn't mean that if your symptoms get better your problems will suddenly go away. Rather, when symptoms get better, you can focus more on achieving your goals. You can put your energy into other things that are important to you, like school, work or relationships.
